Adjutant General Samuel C. Andrews letter to Patrick C. May, August 28, 1835

This letter was written by Adjutant General Samuel C. Andrews, on behalf of Governor Robert Lucas, to Patrick C. May on August 28, 1835. Andrews thanks May for his offer of volunteers for the Michigan conflict, and informs him that when a volunteer company is raised, that company can appoint its own officers. Andrews also lets May know the volunteers' compensation would be the same pay that officers and men in the United States Service receive.Sir, your letter of the 22nd of August on the subject of volunteers for the Michigan conflict was received by the Commander in Chief who directs me to return you his thanks for the prompt & patriotic spirit you express. In answer to your question as respecting the raising a sufficient number of volunteers for a company I have to inform you that such a Company when raised can as a matter of course choose their own officers – as respect to pay of mounted men it is not yet decided what their compensation will be but the rate will be in case they should be call on the same pay with that of officers & men in the United States Service where mounted volunteers have been employed.
