Colored lithograph of General Andrew Jackson on horseback, labelled "The Hero of New Orleans." Jackson (1767-1845) was the first man elected president from the West. Before winning the office of president, he was a hero in the War of 1812 who successfully pushed Native Americans off their land and defended the city of New Orleans from the British. By the end of Jackson's second term as president, he had forever changed the federal government, making the presidency the most powerful branch of the United States government
