Abstract

This photograph depicts an aerial view of the Mound City Group. The Mound City Group is a large Hopewell culture ceremonial center found along the Scioto River in Ross county. The entire group consists of 24 burial mounds surrounded by a large earthen enclosure that is square-shaped with rounded corners. Several mounds were excavated in the 1800s. In the 1920s William C. Mills and Henry C. Shetrone of the Ohio Historical Society excavated several more mounds. Mound City is one of the earliest major centers of the Hopewell culture and was declared a National Monument in 1923
