Photographic portrait of Samuel Medary, ca. 1860, in formal attire. Medary was an Ohio Senator and publisher of the Ohio Statesman (1832-1857), which he used to endorse the Democratic Party's candidates and to build support for its policies. Medary bought the "Ohio Monitor," changed its name to the "Ohio Statesman," and later established "The Crisis." Samuel Medary was born on February 25, 1801, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He relocated to Ohio in 1825. He died in Columbus, Ohio, on November 7, 1864, and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery
