The college was founded in 1824 by Philander Chase, the bishop of the Episcopalian diocese in Ohio, as a seminary so that the Church could grow in Ohio. The print also includes two small illustrations in the lower corners, labeled "Repulse of the British at Fort Stephenson 1813" and "La Fitte the Pirate Chief Refusing to Serve the British 1814.
