Print depicting Fort Washington. Construction of the fort began in 1789. Its purpose was to protect early settlements near modern-day Cincinnati. In 1790, Josiah Harmar used Fort Washington to launch an expedition against the Native Americans tribes in northwest Ohio. The fort would serve similar purposes for the remainder of the 1790s. The United States military abandoned it in 1803
