This image of Santa Claus bringing mittens to sleeping children decorated an advertising card for Star soap, made by Schultz & Co. in Zanesville, Ohio, circa 1890-1900. The back of the card includes an advertisement for Star soap. The card measures 7.75" x 5.75" (19.5 x 14.5 cm). William Shultz purchased the Brown and Covers factory in Zanesville in 1853 and began manufacturing soap. His son, Robert D. Shultz, and nephew, John Hoge, succeeded him in the business. Hoge developed a puzzle contest to boost sales.
