This pipe in effigy (a likeness or representation) of a bear was excavated from Tremper Mound, a Hopewell culture site located five miles north of Portsmouth in Scioto County. The upper torso of the bear, with the front paws forward of body and head extended forward. Eyes are inset with pearls or shells. There is a band of copper on the platform of the pipe. Restoration work has been done on the pipe. Made of dark olive gray stone, it measures approximately 1.4" x 1.4" x 3.6" (3.55 x 3.6 x 9.4 cm). This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound.
