This is a photograph of harness race horses in Ohio. Harness racing is a race in a specified gait, pulling a two wheeled cart called a sulkies. Races are run in two different gaits, pacing and trotting. A pacer moves it legs laterally, that is right front and right hind together, while a trotter moves it's legs forward in diagonal pairs, that is, right front and left hind, then left front and right hind. A sulky is light weight two-wheeled cart with bicycle wheels. The driver is seated on the sulky and carries a long, light weight whip. The whip is used to signal the horse by tapping or to make noise by striking the side of the sulky
