John Milton Hay met Abraham Lincoln through his uncle, a Springfield, Illinois lawyer who worked next door to the future president. Hay served as Lincoln's personal secretary until 1864, and was present at the president's death. His diaries remain a chief primary source for historians of the Civil War. He married into Cleveland high society and lived there in celebrity and boredom from 1875 to 1886. Hay returned to Washington, completing a long career in government as Secretary of State to William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.
