Map showing the the route of the 1938 "Pioneer Caravan" in Ohio. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Northwest Territory expedition, the Sesquicentennial Northwest Territory Expedition traveled in a caravan from Massachusetts to Ohio, aiming to recreate as precisely as possible the trek of the original settlers of the Northwest Territory. Beginning in December 1937, the caravan walked with an ox-drawn Conestoga wagon, aiming to reach the public with historical education through their reenactment. They traveled through the winter, reaching Marietta, Ohio, in April 1938, where they were received with great enthusiasm and a "pioneer parade." The expedition continued to travel throughout the Midwest for the next six months, spreading...
