Thomas and Charity Rotch left Ohio in October 1820 for a long planned celebration of the 86th birthday of William Rotch Sr. in Bedford where they remained until the spring in 1821. Charity did not fair well in Bedford's winter climate, and this letter confirms that on December 23, J. Winslow reported her 'increased complaints' which caused family much anxiety. The writer asks if 'thy health will admit of a longer stay in Bedford,' or if the Rotches might try the inland air of Hartford where they lived from 1800 to 1810. But by March, 1821 they left New England for Kendal by way of shopping in New York and Philadelphia. 7.95" x 10" (20.3 by 25.5 cm
