The youngest child is sitting on the lap of the person under a black sheet, a practice sometimes called the "Hidden Mother," which allowed parents to hold a small child still for the length of time the photographer needed to capture the image. A marking on the negative reads: "Rosa Mathers Schultz WVA." This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912.
