Calidad sanitaria de las fuentes hídricas de la cuenca baja del río Manzanares, Santa Marta, Colombia

This work was aimed at assessing the quality of the water of the downstream basin of the Manzanares River, in order to diagnose its more feasible use according to the Colombian legislation established in Decree 3939 of 2010 (allowable values established in the Decree 1594 of 1984, in effect temporarily) and the Resolution 2115 of 2007. The water from Donama creek presented the best physicochemical (conductivity, 76 μS/cm; BOD, 2,8 mg/l; dissolved oxygen, 6,52 mg/l, phosphorus, 0,05 mg/l; nitrate, 0.11 mg/l) and microbiological conditions (total coliforms, 420 NMP/100 ml: fecal coliforms, 220 NMP/100 ml). The water from Vira Vira, Donama, Matogiro and Chucunchaca creeks and Manzanares River can be used for agricultural, livestock and recreational (through primary and secondary contact) purposes, as well as for preservation of wildlife and associated ecosystems; moreover, these waters are suitable for drinking water production. The water supplied to the village of Bonda does not meet the conditions of color, turbidity, nitrite concentration and total and fecal coliforms established by national regulations. The estimates of BOD, COD, nitrites, solids and coliforms (total and fecal) are the main factors affecting the characteristics of the water resource, explaining 92% of the behavior of the system.Se evaluó la calidad del agua de la cuenca baja del Río Manzanares con el fin de diagnosticar su uso más factible de acuerdo a la normatividad colombiana establecida en el Decreto 3930 de 2010 (valores permisibles establecidos en el Decreto 1594 de 1984, transitoriamente vigente) y la Resolución 2115 de 2007. El agua de la Quebrada Donama presentó las mejores condiciones fisicoquímicas (conductividad, 76 μS/cm; DBO, 2,8 mg/l; oxígeno disuelto, 6,52 mg/l; fósforo, 0,05 mg/l; nitratos, 0,11 mg/l) y microbiológicas (coliformes totales, 420 NMP/100ml; coliformes fecales 220, NMP/100ml). El agua de las quebradas Vira Vira, Donama, Matogiro, Chucunchaca y Río Manzanares puede ser utilizada para fines agrícolas, pecuarios y recreativos mediante contacto primario y secundario, así como para preservación de fauna y flora y mantenimiento de ecosistemas asociados; además, son susceptibles de ser tratadas para obtención de agua potable. El agua cruda (agua natural que no ha sido sometida a proceso de tratamiento para su potabilización) del corregimiento Bonda no cumple con las condiciones de color, turbiedad, concentración de nitritos y coliformes totales y fecales establecidas por la normatividad nacional vigente. Las estimaciones de DBO, DQO, nitritos, sólidos y coliformes totales y fecales son los principales factores que afectan las características del recurso hídrico, explicando en un 92% el comportamiento del sistema. &nbsp
