Reproducción artificial de la ostra del mangle Crassostrea rhizophorae Guilding, 1828 en el Caribe colombiano

In order to validate and optimize the protocol used for the spawning induction and fertilization of the mangrove oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae in Colombia, the reproductive cycle of natural populations from the Ciénaga de Mallorquín, was examined. Two experiments of induced reproduction were performed. In the first one, the effect of two spawning induction techniques (“Colombian” and “Cuban”) were compared based on the spawning response time, the fecundity and the percentages of spawned organisms. In the second experiment, the influence of two fertilization systems (“grouping” and “individual”) was evaluated, in terms of the percentages of oocyte fertilization and larvae D as well as larval growth and survival. Populations studied xhibited a semiannual reproductive cycle, the highest proportion of organisms in mature sexual state were obtained between June and July, coinciding with the beginning of the rainy season. The ercentage of spawned organisms was significantly higher using the Colombian spawning induction technique. The spawning response time was lesser in animals induced by the Colombian technique and the fecundity was not affected by the spawning inductor. Higher values of oocyte fertilization and larval growth were obtained with the grouping system of fertilization. Nevertheless, embryonic and larval survival values were similar for both treatments. In conclusion, the induced reproduction of C. rhizophorae populations from Ciénaga de Mallorquín, could carried out during rainy season (between april and september), using the Colombian spawning induction technique and the grouping system of fertilization. However it is necessary to improve the incubation techniques and larval culture in order to increase survival and growth values. Con el fin de validar y optimizar el protocolo usado para la inducción al desove y fertilización de la ostra del mangle Crassostrea rhizophorae en Colombia, se examinó el ciclo reproductivo de las poblaciones naturales de la Ciénaga de Mallorquín y se llevaron a cabo dos experimentos de reproducción inducida. En el primero, se comparó el efecto de dos técnicas de inducción al desove (“colombiana” y “cubana”) sobre el tiempo de respuesta al desove, fecundidad y porcentajes de organismos desovados. En el segundo experimento, se evaluó la influencia de dos sistemas de fertilización (“grupal” e “individual”) sobre los porcentajes de fertilización, larvas D, supervivencia larval y crecimiento larval. Las poblaciones muestreadas exhibieron un ciclo reproductivo semianual, presentándose la mayor proporción de organismos en estado sexual maduro en junio y julio, coincidiendo con el inicio de la época lluviosa. El porcentaje de organismos desovados fue significativamente mayor utilizando la técnica de inducción al desove colombiana que la cubana. El tiempo de la respuesta de desove fue menor en los animales sometidos a la técnica de inducción colombiana y la fecundidad no fue afectada por el inductor al desove. El sistema de fertilización grupal permitió obtener mayores valores de fertilización de los oocitos y crecimiento larval que el individual. No obstante, los porcentajes de larvas D y la supervivencia larval fueron similares en estos dos tratamientos. En conclusión, la reproducción inducida de C. rhizophorae de la Ciénaga de Mallorquín puede ser realizada durante los periodos de lluvia (entre abril y septiembre), empleando la técnica de inducción colombiana y el sistema de fertilización grupal, sin embargo es necesario perfeccionar las técnicas de incubación y cultivo larvario con el fin de elevar losvalores de supervivencia y crecimiento
