Ethiopia Alive and Thrive Baseline Survey 2010

This dataset is the result of an impact evaluation study undertaken to assess the impact of Alive & Thrive's (A&T) at-scale interventions that combine interpersonal counseling, mass media, and community mobilization in Ethiopia. A&T is a six-year initiative to scale up nutrition to save lives, prevent illness, and ensure healthy growth and development through for improved infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Viet Nam. In Ethiopia, the community-based component was implemented by the government’s health extension workers and its extensive cadre of community health volunteers. To evaluate the impact of A&T's community-based interventions, delivered through the Health Extension Program, an adequacy design constituting of pre- and post-assessments was applied without a comparison group. In order to ensure maximum exposure to A&T interventions, the evaluation was conducted in Tigray and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region (SNNPR), two regions where the interventions were initiated in the first phase. Repeated cross-sectional baseline and endline surveys were conducted. The baseline survey was carried out between June and August 2010 by IFPRI in collaboration with Addis Continental Institute of Public Health (ACIPH). Data collection tools and questionnaires were developed based on UNICEF conceptual framework for child growth and development and on the A&T model framework.
