Filipino American Immigrants: Social Role Strain, Self-Esteem, Locus of Control, Social Networks, Coping, Stress and Mental Health, 1989

The purpose of this study was to describe and explain the mental health outcomes of emotional stress and psychological well-being as they relate to marital, parental, occupational, and economic role strain for Filipino Americans, and to assess those psychological, social, and coping variables that mediate between potential stressors and the impact of stress and psychological well-being. The sample included 216 Filipino Americans aged eighteen years and older in Los Angeles County. The sample was selected from Los Angeles County using a multistage sampling design. The study used a face--to face household survey. In the first stage of sampling, Filipino households were identified using census block data obtained from the California State Census Data Center of Los Angeles County. Once the blocks were identified, door-to-door screening identified eligible households. In each eligible household, one adult was randomly selected at the time of the interview. The selected participant was asked to take part in a face-to-face structured interview in the their home. Trained Interviewers were used to administer the questionnaire. Variables assessed include mental disorders, stress, self-esteem, role strain, locus of controls, social networks, coping, acculturation, socio-demographics, and social class. Measures include items from: the Outpatient Psychiatric Rating Scale (SCL-90), Problems of Everyday Life (1972, 1976-77), Levenson Tri-dimensional Locus of Control, Social Network Scale Index, a revised version of the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans (ARSMA), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Holling shead Two Factor Index of Soc-Position.
