These data include pneumococcal concentration measured by quantitative PCR from nasopharyngeal swab samples collected from children during a longitudinal study of viral transmission among households in rural Kenya. The parent study has been described elsewhere, but in brief, swabs were collected twice weekly from all members of 47 households in Kilifi County, Kenya during the RSV season from December 2009 until June 2010. Swabs collected during periods of upper respiratory tract infection associated with viral (RSV or rhinovirus) infection from children <5 years old, swabs from the 2 weeks prior to such viral infection periods and swabs from the 4 weeks following such periods, were examined.
