Jakość starzenia się i starości w subiektywnej ocenie słuchaczy Uniwersytetu Trzeciego Wieku

Background. The way you perceive your own ageing and old age is an important element of life. The aim of the study was to analyze the opinions of the members of the University of the Third Age about their old age and ageing. Material and methods. The study involved 80 members of the University of the Third Age in Bydgoszcz and was conducted at the turn of March and April 2008. Membership in the University of the Third Age was the main inclusion criterion for the study. The method of diagnostic survey and author’s original questionnaire were used in the study. Results. Members of the University of the Third Age believe that it is the man himself who has the greatest influence on the shape and quality of life, including old age. 50% respondents are satisfied with their lives and consider them as interesting and satisfactory. Majority of the respondents notice that there have been more achievements than failures in their lives. More than 50% believe that old age can be a favorable period. About 70% respondents feel younger than they actually are. More than 75% have never experienced discrimination because of old age. The greatest fears of the respondents include fear for serious diseases and dependence on others. Over 90% respondents prefer active lifestyle which makes ageing easier. Conclusions. All these positive opinions indicate that the process of ageing is quite favorable for the members of the University of the Third Age. Universities of the Third Age are an effective way leading to favorable ageing and minimizing the discrimination of the elderly.Wstęp. Subiektywny obraz własnej starości i starzenia się stanowi ważną składową jakości życia. Celem pracy była analiza ocen słuchaczy Uniwersytetu Trzeciego Wieku dotyczących własnej starości i starzenia się. Materiał i metody. Przebadano 80 osób będących słuchaczami Uniwersytetu Trzeciego Wieku (UTW) w Bydgoszczy na przełomie marca i kwietnia 2008 roku. Uczestnictwo w UTW było podstawowym kryterium doboru badanych. Badania prowadzono metodą sondażu diagnostycznego przy użyciu ankiety własnej konstrukcji. Wyniki. Słuchacze UTW uważają, że człowiek w dużym stopniu ma wpływ na kształt i jakość swojego życia, także własnej starości. Co druga badana osoba odczuwa satysfakcję z własnego życia i ocenia je jako ciekawe i udane. Zdecydowana większość respondentów dostrzega u siebie przewagę osiągnięć. Ponad połowa słuchaczy UTW uważa, że starość jako faza życia może być dla człowieka pomyślnym okresem. Około 70% grupy badawczej subiektywnie czuje się młodsza. Ponad 3/4 badanych nie doświadczyło dyskryminacji z racji starszego wieku. Najwięcej obaw wiążą oni z ciężką chorobą i zależnością od innych. Ponad 90% badanych preferuje aktywny styl życia i dostrzega w tym metodę na osiągnięcie pomyślnego starzenia się. Wnioski. Przewaga ocen pozytywnych świadczy o pomyślnym starzeniu się słuchaczy Uniwersytetów Trzeciego Wieku, które umożliwiają w dużym stopniu pomyślne starzenie się i minimalizowanie marginalizacji osób starszych
