Orthorexia (lat. orthorexia nervosa) is obsession with healthy food and it is a mental illness associated with eating disorders. It usually begins very gently and innocently — from improving the quality of meals. At the very beginning dishes universally regarded unhealthy are being eliminated from the diet (fried meat, fatty sauces, sweets), and diet is being made rich with fresh vegetables, fruits, not-sweetened juices, boiled fish. The next step is buying the natural food and start reading food labels. If these activities don’t go further we cannot talk about the progression of the disease. The problem begins when the control of what is landing on the plate is getting more serious and the elimination of some products from the usual diet causes considerable deficiencies of mineral elements and vitamins. The results of these activities are headaches, nausea, constant tiredness, anaemia, and osteoporosis. Functioning of intestines is being disturbed and susceptibility to infections is increasing. The exact number of orthorectic patients is not known. Zwykle zaczyna się bardzo łagodnie i niewinnie — od poprawiania jakości posiłków. Na samym początku z diety eliminuje się potrawy powszechnie uznawane za niezdrowe (smażone mięso, tłuste sosy, słodycze), a wzbogaca się ją świeżymi jarzynami, owocami, niesłodzonymi sokami, gotowanymi rybami. Następny krok to kupowanie naturalnej żywności i czytani e etykiet. Jeżeli poprzestaje się na tym etapie, nie możemy mówić o rozwoju choroby. Problem zaczyna się wtedy, gdy kontrolowanie tego, co ląduje na talerzu przybiera coraz ostrzejszy charakter, a eliminacja z jadłospisu niektórych produktów powoduje znaczne niedobory składników mineralnych i witamin. Efektem są bóle i zawroty głowy, nudności, ciągłe zmęczenie, anemia, osteoporoza. Zaburzona zostaje praca jelit i wzrasta podatność na infekcje. Dokładna liczba ortorektyków nie jest znana. Spowodowane jest to tym, że chorzy na ortoreksję rzadko zgłaszają się na leczenie lub leczą się w kierunku innych chorób
