Ottaviano Mascarino a Tivoli: la chiesa di San Nicola

The essay aims to include the church of St. Nicholas in Tivoli, built between 1588 and 1596 for the Roman hospital of S. Spirito in Sassia, between Ottaviano Mascarino’s works: in that period he was official architect of that religious hospital order. The allocation relies mainly on documents kept in the State Archive of Rome, but is also supported by a detailed analysis of the type and elements of the architectural language. The chapel is compared with some drawings of Mascarino: one of them reproduces the plan of the church of S. Maria del Piano in Capranica, designed by Vignola, from which our building unquestionably derives. The comparison with the drawings quoted in the text emphasizes a real research conducted by Mascarino, who used to repeat some shapes and stylistic elements in his projects of sacred and civil architecture.The essay finally enters the chapel in the context of the Roman architectural production of the end of the sixteenth century, but also notes how some aspects seem to anticipate compositional schemes that will emerge permanently in the early decades of the next century.Keywords: Aedicule-shaped facade, banded architectural order, biaxial plan, two-apsed hall, Ottaviano Mascarino.Il contributo mira ad inserire nel corpus delle opere ascritte ad Ottaviano Mascarino la chiesa di S. Nicola a Tivoli, edificata tra il 1588 e il 1596 per l’Arcispedale di S. Spirito in Sassia di Roma, che in quegli anni si avvaleva delle prestazioni dell’architetto bolognese. L’attribuzione si basa principalmente su alcuni documenti custoditi presso l’Archivio di Stato di Roma, ma è supportata anche da una puntuale analisi tipologica e degli elementi del linguaggio architettonico. L’edificio è posto in relazione con alcuni disegni mascheriniani: uno di questi riproduce la pianta della chiesa vignolesca di S. Maria del Piano in Capranica, dalla quale il nostro edificio deriva innegabilmente. Il confronto con i disegni citati nel testo pone in evidenza una vera e propria ricerca portata avanti nel tempo dal Mascarino, che soleva riproporre alcune forme e stilemi nei suoi progetti di architettura sacra e civile.L’edificio oggetto di questo saggio è infine inquadrato nella produzione architettonica romana della fine del secolo XVI, ma si segnalano alcuni aspetti che sembrano anticipare temi compositivi che troveranno la piena affermazione nei primi vent’anni del secolo successivo.Finally, the essay places the chapel in the context of Roman architecture of the end of the sixteenth century, but also notes how some aspects seem to anticipate compositional schemes that were to emerge permanently in the early decades of the next century.Keywords: Aedicule-shaped facade, banded architectural order, biaxial plan, two-apsed hall, Ottaviano Mascarino
