SPINOZA, MELANCHOLY AND THE ABSOLUTELY INFINITE IN SEVENTEENTH CENTURY’S GEOMETRY OF INDIVISIBLES

The article aims to reconstruct the seventeenth-century debate of the scientific nature of mathematics and the possibility of conceiving an idea of a positive infinite to address the philosophical implications of mathematics in Spinoza’s work, emphasizing the geometric ordering in his Ethics. We will approach the mathematical thinking of that philosopher from three perspectives: the pedagogical, the epistemological and the ontological. In the pedagogical sense, his synthetic geometry aims to inhabit the evidence as rhetorical and pedagogical expression of a perfect and self-evident concatenation that leads the progress of the reader through philosophical propositions. In the epistemological sense, we have the aim of inhabiting the thing defined by a genetic definition that provides the very acting (atuosa) essence of a thing. That epistemological sense provides us the difference between a definition of a thing by its predicates (or effects) or through its inner essence (or efficient cause). And finally, in the ontological sense of inhabiting the infinite itself, because geometry can bring us the proper way to conceive the positive idea of the absolutely infinite in which we necessarily are and take part.O artigo procurar refazer o debate seiscentista acerca da cientificidade da matemática e da possibilidade de se conceber a ideia do infinito positivo para abordar as implicações filosóficas da matemática na obra de Espinosa, dando estaque para a ordenação geométrica em sua Ética. Abordaremos o pensamento matemático do filósofo a partir de três perspectivas: a pedagógica, a epistemológica e a ontológica. No sentido pedagógico, a sua geometria sintética procura habitar a evidência como expressão retórica e pedagógica de encadeamentos perfeitos e auto evidentes que conduzem o andamento do leitor por proposições filosóficas. No sentido epistemológico, temos o habitar da própria coisa entendida por meio de uma definição genética que fornece tanto a própria essência atuosa da coisa como a diferença entre defini-la por meio de seus predicados (ou efeitos) ou por meio de sua essência íntima (ou causa eficiente). E no sentido ontológico de habitar o próprio infinito, pois a geometria nos fornece a própria forma para concebermos a ideia positiva de um absolutamente infinito em que necessariamente somos e tomamos parte.
