Who inhabits human dignity? The kantian grounding

This paper examines Kant’s concept of human dignity based on the Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals (1785), in particular, the role of the autonomy of the will in grounding dignity. The starting point of such examination is the transcendental freedom of the Critique of pure reason (1787 edition), followed by the analysis of some elements of Kant’s moral theory, especially the categorical imperative, in two of its formulations, and the concept of human dignity. The relationship between dignity, rationality and autonomy (as self-legislation, in accordance with Kantian morality) constitutes the purpose of the paper, to be concluded with brief comments on some difficulties arising from that relationship.O artigo examina o conceito kantiano de dignidade humana com base na Fundamentação da metafísica dos costumes (1785), em particular, o papel da autonomia da vontade na fundamentação da dignidade. O ponto de partida desse exame é a liberdade transcendental de que trata a Crítica da razão pura (edição de 1787), seguindo-se a análise de alguns elementos da teoria moral kantiana, notadamente o imperativo categórico, em duas de suas formulações, e o conceito de dignidade humana. A relação entre dignidade, racionalidade e autonomia (enquanto autolegislação, conforme à moral kantiana) constitui o objetivo do artigo, que se concluirá com breves comentários sobre algumas dificuldades que tal relação suscita
