The film The name of the rose: secret among flowers and laughter into flames

The title of the book and movie comes from the sentence with which both end: “the ancient rose remains in the name, nothing beyond the name have we got”. The rose itself has, for innumerous ancient cultures, always represented the female secret, silence, non-laughter, the non-utterance about anything, but, otherwise, contemplation, feeling, living and being reborn. For the Christian monks in a mind-devastated Europe by the anti-pagan persecution, the rose was the sublime temptation that could transubstantiate itself in a mystical emblem of the feminine aspect of the divine. O título da obra e do filme advém da frase com a qual eles se encerram: “a rosa antiga permanece no nome, nada temos além do nome”. Ela, a rosa em si, para inúmeras culturas antigas, sempre representou o segredo feminino, o silêncio, o não rir, o não se pronunciar sobre algo, senão apenas contemplar, sentir, viver e renascer. Para os monges cristãos de uma Europa devastada mentalmente pela perseguição antipagã, a rosa era a sublime tentação que poderia transubstanciar-se no místico emblema do aspecto feminino da divindade
