Lingüística e Filologia. O eterno debate

The relationship between 'philology' and 'linguistcs' has been a contentious issue in the study of language for over 150 years. This paper sketches part of the origins of the philology/linguistics debate and, at the same time, hints at some of the reasons behind certain differences between the Anglo-Saxon and the Continental European terminological traditions. The value of terms like philology,philologie (compareé), Philologie; and linguistics, linguistique, Sprachwissenschaft, Linguistik, as well as the scope of the sope of the corresponding disciplines they used to designate are reviseted, tracing their usage among some generations of 19th and 20th century linguistics.As relações entre 'linguística' e 'filologia' têm sido polemicamente tratadas no estudo da linguagem há pelo menos 150 anos. O presente texto, ao mesmo tempo em que procura mapear as origens do debate, chama a atenção para certas diferenças terminológicas no uso das duas designações, tais como se consagraram na tradição anglo-saxônica de estudo da linguagem e nas tradições que se desenvolveram na Europa continental. O valor dos termos - philology (ingl.); philologie (fr.); philologie compareé (fr.); Philologie (al.) e linguistics (ingl.); linguistique (fr.); Sprachwissenschaft (al.); Linguistik (al.) - bem como o escopo das disciplinas que correspondentemente passaram a designar, é revisto a partir do uso que lhes imprimiram algumas gerações de linguistas do século passado e deste século
