Anthropology and visuality in the indige- nous context

The elaboration and presentation ofsounds and images is approached here as part of aconstantly reflexive movement, which goes beyondthe products of film production to reveal a polypho-nic process of the construction of images and auto-images. In this analysis, emphasis has been given toforms of representation in ethnographic film andvideo, a genre that develops in parallel to the docu-mentary movement, in which the central elements arerealism and the analysis of difference. In the develop-ment of this article, the analysis of forms of represen-tation reveals a complex process of communication,which articulates different concepts of the visual. Theemergence of a reflexive audio-visual practice amongindigenous societies not only bears influence on theterms of inter-ethnic dialogue and dialogue with thedominant culture but is also relevant in the develop-ment of new approaches to the role of the image inthe field of anthropological investigation, which inturn go beyond forms of representation to inscribethemselves on conceptions of the visual.A elaboração e a transmissão continua-da de sons e imagens são aqui abordadas como umconstante movimento que vai além dos produtosfílmicos, revelando um processo de construção deimagens e auto-imagens.
