The present article intends tocontribute to the debate about anthropologicalanalysis of theatre in contemporary societies.It analyzes the impact of the Theatre Anthropo-logy of Eugenio Barba, which despite its globaldiffusion and acceptance in the theatre researcharea, does not have any anthropological validi-ty. In opposition to this view, the work of Vic-tor Turner, giving origin to the Anthropologyof Performance, has been used as an importantsupport, despite many a-historical, mechanicaland de-contextualized applications.
