A segmentação no mercado de trabalho do setor industrial de São Paulo (1889-1920)

This article focuses on the relationships between, on one hand, the differences in the working conditions (wages and work duration), the composition by age and by gender, and the negotiating power of the several categories of workers, and on the other hand, the heterogeneity of technical and organizational structures of the various sectors that made up the State of São Paulo industry from 1889 to 1920. Evidence is provided to demonstrate the influence that the diversity in the technical processes and the forms of organization of firms had on differences in the labour market, mainly through the worker’s skills that were made necessary by the technical characteristics of the production process.Este artigo tem como objetivo focalizar as relações entre, de um lado, as diferenças nas condições de trabalho (salário e duração de trabalho), na composição etária e por gênero, e no poder de barganha das diversas categorias de trabalhadores e, de outro, a heterogeneidade das estruturas técnicas e organizacionais dos vários ramos que compunham a indústria paulista durante o período de1889 a1920. Argumenta-se que a diversidade no modo de organização e no estágio técnico das empresas industriais constitui um fator importante na determinação das diferenças que se manifestaram no mercado de trabalho, sendo esta relação mediada pelo grau de qualificação do trabalhador exigido pelas características técnicas do processo de produção
