Primary metabolic compounds synthesized in higher plants follow a complex interconnected web of pathways, such that the regulation of enzymes within these pathways can affect down stream reactions. In order to study the enzymatic pathways of carotenoid production in Humulus lupulus L. (hops), plants were established in vitro by micropropagation of nodal explants. The young shoots of the Cascade variety were cultured on solid agar medium composed of a modified MS11 (Murashigee and Skoog, 1962) medium with plant growth regulators indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), and a-napthalene acetic acid (NAA)14.
