A Childhood as an object of history: A historiographical review

This article aims to take stock of how the theme of childhood has been discussed in historiography. Given the extent of the issue, we adopted as an analytical focus the non-Brazilian historiography on this problem, especially the European and the US, from mid-twentieth century. Therefore we will make a panorama starting from Philippe Aries’s book, Social History of Child and Family, first published in the early 1960s. From this work, we will continue with its critics, advocates and several new trends in the study of childhood in history that have been developed.O presente artigo tem como objetivo traçar um balanço sobre como o tema da infância e da juventude tem sido abordado na historiografia. Tendo em vista a escassez de trabalhos acadêmicos no Brasil de cunho de discussão teórica acerca da história da infância, faremos um panorama neste sentido partindo do livro fundador de Philippe Ariès, História Social da Criança e da Família, publicado inicialmente no início dos anos 1960. A partir desta obra, prosseguiremos com seus críticos, defensores e as diversas novas tendências em relação ao estudo da infância na história que vêm sido desenvolvidas, enfatizando aquelas ligadas à saúde e mortalidade infantil
