This poster will examine how the environment created by the volunteers at the afterschool program, Peace of the City, affects the neighborhood youth that participates in the program. Focusing on children ranging from ages 4-12, it will highlight how the children are impacted by the very welcoming environment set up by the organization. These children often come from low-income families and may not feel comfortable going home right after school until they have to go to bed. This safe space was created in order to welcome anyone from the neighborhood, where kids can play together and work on their homework with help from the staff.
