The text reports on a research in the field of the teaching of reading and writing carried out with two first year classes of fundamental education at a public school in the city of São Paulo. Starting from diagnostics based on the oral culture of the pupils that displayed learning difficulties in reading even after three or four years of schooling, we sought to create, administer, and monitor a teaching program based on the transition between oral culture and written culture. It is a research of qualitative nature, whose concern is to deal with the heterogeneity of the classroom in its process and in its complexity.
