A Study on Configuration of Pedestrian Space in Turkey

This paper analyzes the configuration of pedestrian space in Turkey through the study of spatial composition. Turkey has different climates according to regions and has developed under various cultural influences due to its geographical location connecting Asia, Europe and Africa. In this paper, we will try to gain an understanding of regional characteristics as well as the overall picture of Turkey through the analysis of urban space for pedestrians. The subject of research in this study is the pedestrian space which includes traditional business areas as well as the areas where open markets are held, and the space prepared exclusively for pedestrians by the administration. A field survey was conducted in August 2006 for the purpose of exploring the direction our pedestrian space study should go. Thirty-two districts in twelve cities were selected as the field survey spots for space configuration and their functions as well as their surrounding facilities were recorded. Information gathering in administrative agencies in various regions was also conducted. The study was organized according to the following four categories: space, facilities, appliances and their environment.
