The Grito de Lares of 1868 was one of the most important events in Puerto Rico during the nineteenth-century. Puerto Rican historiography has given the Grito de Lares a great deal of attention during years. It has studied the contexts that help explain its occurrence, its participants, their ideas and class interests. It‘s also debated about its political and social significance. In recent years, Dr. Francisco Moscoso has published some books about the Grito de Lares that has drawn again the attention of historians to this important event. This essay takes in consideration Moscosos‘ books to study briefly some aspects of the relationship of the Catholic hierarchy and clergy to the Grito de Lares.
