Confined to parks and forests, nature in French urban areas has been used as an instrument for urban planners and developers. Recent urban projects have sought to give natural systems a fuller role in territorial development. This new function can be considered a radically new approach. At the same time, current redevelopment projects must also integrate existing facilities. The redevelopment of the banks of the Seine by the Hauts-de-Seine council is a good example of this new role that nature can play in urban revitalisation.
