The cerebral cortex, the seat of our cognitive abilities, is composed of an intricate network of billions of excitatory projection and inhibitory interneurons. Postmitotic cortical neurons are generated by a diverse set of neural stem cell progenitors within dedicated zones and defined periods of neurogenesis during embryonic development.
