The hooked rug has risen to iconic status as a representation of Newfoundland and Labrador crafts. The rug has evolved from being a mostly functional item, used to keep people's feet warm, to a production-line commodity and, recently, has come to prominence as expressive culture. There are parallels in the American Craft Movement wherein commodification often changed, or even usurped, meaning: the creative act was supplanted by the emphasis on the product itself.
