Many authors writing about female industrial workers in the past have created a profoundly negative image of both their work and their lives. They have stressed the obstacles to their involvement in labour organizations and in demonstrations of working class militancy to the point that women workers often appear as constantly oppressed, powerless victims. An examination of women employed in the Quebec cotton mills between 1891 and 1951 reveals a more complex reality. What follows is part of a more extensive study based in large part on interviews with four cohorts of female workers.
