Historical, social and current questions of contemporary visualization techniques used in mass-produced art books will be analyzed, with a specific focus on books produced by artists. A detailed historical overview of how artists used books as a medium of expressing their ideas will be presented, starting from early avant-garde (Surrealists, Dadaists, Constructivists, Situationists until our contemporary times. The aim is to show how the book-making has been utilized for advancing the experimental visualization techniques, by linking artistic and cultural innovations to inventions in design.
