Sistem penambangan yang digunakan di PT. KPC adalah system tambang terbuka. Mineral-mineral sulfida yang terkandung di batuan penutup dan batubara akan terekspos sehingga terjadi peningkatan kecepatan reaksi antara mineral-mineral tersebut dengan udara dan air yang kemudian menghasilkan air asam tambang. Dari hasil pengujian di laboratorium membuktikan bahwa kapur tohor cukup efektif untuk menetralkan air asam tambang dari pH rata-rata 2,93 menjadi 7,20, dengan dosis optimum kapur 0,104 g/L. Hasil uji coba greenhydro untuk menetralkan air asam tambang juga menunjukan hasil yang positif dengan kadar 1,04 gr/l berhasil menaikkan pH rata-rata 2,93 menjadi 7,25.
