These days the most important thing in education is to nurture the ability of students so they can contribute to the development of their local area and appreciate their birth place and their own country. It is necessary for students to be proud of Japanese culture, tradition and history. Moreover they must acquire the attitude of Japanese who work in an international society. Studying social studies in elementary school is especially important for this. In this paper, the goal of studying one\u27s local area in the middle grades and studying industry and history in the higher grades is clarified. Also the paper shows how to develop teaching material on a local area and how to evaluate the results. It includes various examples for guidance in making learning material.
