The mines were owned by the Texas and Pacific Coal Company.An accompanying undated photocopied press release states "Coal miners in Thurber, Texas, rode to and from work each day aborad a Texas and Pacific Coal Company train, a service begun by the company in 1895. The historic town between Abilene and Fort Worth has virtually disappeared and only the record of coal mining remains in Texas Tech University's Southwest Collection, historical reporsitory and research center. Texas Pacific Oil of Dallas recently donated the one million pages of Thurber history to Tech, boosting the repository's collection to 13 million leaves. The material will soon be available for research.
