Abstract: In the current Age of the Internet, communication studies is coming to be recognized as one of the most significant and useful of the social sciences. Yet communication programs at Canadian universities are few and small, in no way proportionate to the importance of this discipline. Given the current funding climate for higher education, this state of affairs can be improved only by making use of distance education and creative new models of inter-institutional consortia. Current models of distance education make this type of education an increasingly attractive option for individuals who want to increase their understanding of and competence in communication by enrolling in a university level communication program.
