Abstract: Are there good reasons for communications programs in Canada to experiment with distance and distributed learning technologies? This paper argues that because there are only a handful of relatively small programs in the country which are geographically dispersed, it may make sense to use networked technologies to develop a critical mass of expertise in an emerging field like the social context of information and communication technologies (ICT). The paper reports on two recent research projects: the first evaluates existing technical modes in terms of networking expertise at a distance; the second experiments with new modes (WebCT, Mbone videoconferencing).
