Evaluation of Learning Skills in University Students(Cultural and Social science)

P(論文)This survey aimed to found contents of learning skills in Japanese university students by the Study Skills Surveys (Brown, 1965). Subjects were 210 male, 272 female students in daytime college and 151 male, 41 female students in evening college in the Tokyo metropolitan area (this survey had done in Jan. 1980). The results of this survey according to the original items of the Brown's questionnaire were shown on the Table 2. And the score according to the sub-category (study organization, study technique, study motivation and total study skills) were shown on the Table 1 (but the author omitted item No. 14 and 34 for the results of item analysis). Correlations between each sub-category were shown by the Table 3. Problems of learning skills in Japanese university students which the author have found in this survey were in the field that were refered from the items-1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 20, 23, 31, 36 and 51. 1. Do you usually put off preparing thems and reports until the last minute? 2. Do you frequently find that you are too tired or sleepy to study efficiency? 4. Do you frequently spend time reading magazines, watching television, or exchanging gossip when you should be studying? 6. Do you usually wait a day or more before reviewing the notes taken in class? 8. Do you sometimes suddenly discover that an assignment in due sooner than you thought it was? 10. Do you seem to accomplish very little in relation to the amount of time that you spend studying? 20. Is your studying often slowed down because needed books or study materials are not on hand? 23. Do you frequently have difficulty picking out the important points in a reading assignment? 31. Do you frequently have trouble organizing the content of a term paper or report? 36. Do you depend mainly on last minute cramming in preparing for test? 51. Is your studying often a hit-or-miss proposition depending on the mood you are in? The author supposed training of students' learning skills is the one of the tasks of student counseling services or psychological services in Japan in near future.
