La Guerra de Castas y su impacto agrario en los pueblos del oriente de Yucatán, 1847-1870

The agrarian landscape of an area or region in a given period can be the result of a local agrarian process or its amalgamation with political, economic, social and agrarian processes. It can also be a consequence of the conditioning of conjunctural historical events. Taking as a framework this premise, the objective of this article is to show the agrarian landscape that the caste war forged in the east of Yucatan between 1847 and 1870. With the analysis of the demographic consequences and the material devastation that caused the caste war, Based on published and primary sources, it was possible to identify the traits that defined the agrarian landscape of the Yucatan east. These features consisted of the surplus land owned by the towns and the control they had over them, the uninhabited settlements as well as their lands, the predominance of the milpa as the only means of subsistence and the decadent state of the farms, which only they dedicated themselves to the cultivation of corn for the subsistence of their owners. Thus, the armed movement of the Yucatec Maya was responsible for drawing the agrarian landscape of eastern Yucatan during this period. It was, then, an agrarian landscape with its own identity and that contrasted with the one that was set in northwest Yucatan.    El paisaje agrario de una zona o región en una determinada época puede ser resultado de un proceso agrario local o su amalgama con procesos políticos, económicos, sociales y agrarios. También puede ser consecuencia del condicionamiento de hechos históricos coyunturales. Teniendo como marco esta premisa, el objetivo de este artículo es mostrar el paisaje agrario que la guerra de castas forjó en el oriente de Yucatán entre 1847 y 1870. Con el análisis de las secuelas demográficas y la devastación material que causó la guerra de castas, basado en fuentes publicadas y primarias, se pudo identificar los rasgos que definieron el paisaje agrario del oriente yucateco. Estos rasgos consistieron en los excedentes de tierras que poseían los pueblos y el control que tuvieron sobre ellas, los asentamientos deshabitados al igual que sus tierras, el predominio de la milpa como el único medio de subsistencia y el estado decadente de las fincas, que sólo se dedicaron al cultivo de maíz para la subsistencia de sus propietarios. Así, el movimiento armado de los mayas yucatecos fue responsable de dibujar el paisaje agrario del oriente de Yucatán en ese período. Se trató, pues, de un paisaje agrario con identidad propia y que contrastó con el que se configuró en el noroeste yucateco. &nbsp
