The goal of this study was to document the spelling errors of students with and without reading problems and to investigate the relationship between those spelling errors and the phonemic awareness level of the students. Sixty students, 33 with reading disabilities and 27 average readers participated in the study. Data collection included tasks of phonemic awareness and a task of spelling words, pseudo-words and sentences. Spelling errors were categorized as accentuation errors, phonological errors and errors of historical orthography. Analysis of these data showed that the level of phonemic awareness was strongly and negatively correlated to spelling errors
