In our presentation we investigate the epistemological conditions of the development of grammar-translation, structural and communicative language teaching methods. First, we argue that a social epistemological perspective can contribute to this investigation. Secondly, we identify the basic cultural and social features of late modernity and present how these features are related to communicative language teaching methods. Finally, using Thomas Kuhn’s (1970) paradigm theory we construct an epistemological perspective which can show the epistemological conditions of language teaching in general
