Monitoring the change of Land Usage of the nodes of Egnatia Odos in Veria and Kozani, Greece

The relationship between the two systems, transportation and land use is a complex process, with constant feedback. The system of transport by providing mobility creates installation opportunities or position benefits for specific land uses. For that reason transport emerged as an important factor in influencing the installation of land uses. In the present paper we study the change of land use in the nodes of the Egnatia Odos in Kozani and Veria in Greece. By using remote sensing methods and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) programs like Erdas Imagine 2011 ® and ArcMap 10 ®, we produced classified satellite images of the nodes of Egnatia Odos and calculated the total area of each category. The purpose of this procedure is to create cartographic products and reflect the above changes during the decade 1998-2008 in order to draw conclusions about the influence of a major project such as Egnatia Odos , and the changes of land use in the surrounding area
