Buruli ulcer (BU) is a severe necrotizing infection of skin and soft tissues caused by the fresh-water mycobacterium, Mycobacterium ulcerans. While it is rarely fatal, it can profoundly debilitate those it affects, resulting in extreme individual morbidity, as well as a profound financial, emotional and social burden for the families and communities affected.
